How Many Boxes of Laminate Flooring for a 12×12 Room?

October 20, 2026 · 6 min read

A 12×12 room is 144 sq ft. See exactly how many boxes of laminate to buy for common box sizes and layouts, how much extra to add, and what else you need for the job.

The quick answer

A 12 × 12 ft room has 144 sq ft of floor. Add the 10% that Pergo recommends for cuts and waste, and you need to cover 158.4 sq ft. With a typical 7½-inch-wide laminate that comes 19.63 sq ft to the box, that's 9 boxes. Narrower planks pack less into each box: at 16.12 sq ft per box you'd need 10 boxes.

Box coverage is the number that changes the answer, so check it on the product label. Enter it with your room size in our flooring calculator to get the exact number of boxes and the total cost.

How to work it out

  • Measure the floor area. Length × width: 12 × 12 = 144 sq ft. Measure wall to wall at floor level and include closets that will get the same floor.
  • Add waste. Pergo's installation guide says to add 10% for standard installations and 15% for diagonal ones (Pergo Installation Essentials). 144 × 1.10 = 158.4 sq ft.
  • Divide by the box coverage and round up. 158.4 ÷ 19.63 = 8.07, so you need 9 boxes. Always round up, because stores sell whole boxes and the last row in a room is almost always a cut row.

Those 9 boxes cover 176.7 sq ft, about 32 sq ft more than the room. That's not wasted money: keep the leftover planks for future repairs, since discontinued colors are very hard to match later.

How much extra for diagonal or herringbone layouts?

Angled layouts produce more offcuts. Pergo recommends 15% extra for diagonal installations, and our calculator allows 20% for herringbone or chevron patterns. In a 12 × 12 room with 19.63 sq ft boxes, the rounding works in your favor:

  • Straight, 10% extra: 158.4 sq ft → 9 boxes
  • Diagonal, 15% extra: 165.6 sq ft → 9 boxes
  • Herringbone, 20% extra: 172.8 sq ft → 9 boxes

So for this room, 9 boxes cover any layout. With smaller boxes or a larger room, though, the layout will change the count. In our flooring calculator, choose the layout option with the right waste allowance. For standard laminate, pick the 10% option to match Pergo's guidance, rather than the 7% straight-lay option.

What else you need for a 12×12 room

  • Underlayment. Many laminates, including Pergo Outlast+, come with a pad already attached, so you don't need a separate foam layer. Over concrete, the instructions may still call for a 6-mil polyethylene moisture barrier. Check the guide for your product.
  • Expansion space and spacers. Laminate floats, so it expands and contracts. Pergo's current guide calls for a 3/8-inch gap around the whole perimeter, which is hidden by baseboard or quarter-round. Spacers keep the gap even while you work.
  • Trim. The perimeter of a 12 × 12 room is 48 ft. Minus a standard 3 ft doorway, that's about 45 ft of quarter-round or baseboard, or six 8 ft lengths with a little to spare for miter cuts.
  • A transition strip at the doorway where the laminate meets another floor, and a saw to undercut the door casing so the planks can slide underneath.

Before you install

  • Acclimate the boxes. Pergo says to leave unopened cartons lying flat in the room for 48–96 hours, depending on climate, before you start.
  • Mix planks from several boxes as you go, so color and grain variation spreads evenly across the floor instead of showing up as patches.
  • Check the subfloor is flat. Dips and humps make click joints flex and open up over time. Fill low spots and sand down high ones before you lay the first row.
